Email support@gohuck.app and you will get a real person. Huck is made by one person in Rathdrum, Idaho, so please allow a couple of days — and if you found a bug, the trail name and roughly where you were is enormously helpful.
Getting started
Do I need to download anything before I go?
No. The Idaho Panhandle is built into the app and works the moment you install it, with no network at all. The other five regions — Clearwater & Nez Perce, Salmon River Country, Boise & Owyhee, Sawtooth & Twin Falls, and Caribou-Targhee & Island Park — download free from the Downloads sheet.
Download regions before you leave.
Region packs run from about 80 MB to 130 MB and need a connection. Grab the ones you want on Wi-Fi at home; once installed they never need the network again.
Why does the app want my location?
To draw your position, to tell you which trail you are standing on, and to record a track when you start one. Everything else — browsing, searching, reading trail details — works without granting it.
On the trail
Recording with the screen off
Turn on background recording in Settings and Huck keeps recording with the phone in your pocket. iOS will show a location indicator while it does. Expect meaningfully more battery use — a power bank is a good idea on a long day.
The map stopped following me
Panning the map hands control back to you, on purpose — you are usually panning because you want to look ahead. Tap the recenter arrow at the top of the zoom buttons to pick following back up. Starting a trail zooms in close and re-centres on you automatically.
Why can't I start a trail?
"Start trail" needs you to be within about 100 metres of the trail. From further off, the card shows how far away you are instead — and "Take me there" will drive you to it.
My position looks wrong or jumps around
GPS is poor under heavy canopy and in deep canyons. The shaded circle around your dot is the accuracy the phone reports; when it is large, trust it. Huck snaps your position to a nearby trail when it is confident, and you can tune or disable that in Settings.
Exporting a track
Open the track from the tracks list and share it — Huck writes a standard GPX file that any other mapping tool will read.
Huck+
What is free and what is not?
Free, permanently: the offline maps and hillshaded terrain, trail details and elevation profiles, search, favourites, GPS and the follow-me map, track recording and GPX export, waypoints, routes, and turn-by-turn driving directions to trailheads.
Huck+ adds: hunt units and elk zones, controlled hunt draw areas, seasonal open and close dates with today's status, downloadable weather forecasts, and offline satellite imagery for the regions that offer it.
I paid but Huck+ is not active
Open Huck+ and tap Restore purchase. That asks the App Store directly. If it still does not activate, check you are signed in with the same Apple Account that bought it, then email us.
Managing or cancelling
Huck+ renews yearly. Manage or cancel it in Settings → your name → Subscriptions on your iPhone. Refunds are handled by Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com. Cancelling never touches your tracks, waypoints or downloaded maps.
Does Huck+ work offline?
The hunt units and controlled hunt boundaries ship inside the app, so they work with no signal the moment Huck+ is active. Weather is the exception: it is a live forecast download, so pull it before you lose bars and it will still be there at camp.
Data
A trail is missing, or the map is wrong
Huck reproduces what the agencies publish — the US Forest Service, Idaho Parks & Recreation, the BLM and the Idaho Department of Lands. If a trail is missing from their data it will be missing here. Tell us anyway: support@gohuck.app. Knowing which sources have holes is how the next refresh gets better.
How current is it?
Sources are re-checked and packs are rebuilt periodically; the app shows a "New data" badge in Downloads when a region you have installed has been updated, and re-downloads only the parts that changed.
Please do not navigate by Huck alone
Boundaries are simplified, dates describe legal openings rather than snow-free conditions, and public data is imperfect. Carry a paper map and a compass. Where a sign or the printed regulations disagree with the app, they are right. See the Terms of Use.
Privacy
Huck has no accounts and no analytics, and your location never leaves your phone. The full privacy policy is short and worth reading.
